研究課題
これまで，開発経済学の分析手法を用いて，インド経済が現在直面するさまざまな経済問題を分析してきました。そのなかでも，マクロ経済問題と貧困問題の解明に重点を置いています。
最近の具体的な研究テーマとしては，つぎの3つがあります。
第1に，1991年にスタートしたグローバリゼーションがインドのマクロ経済やマクロ経済政策にどのような影響を及ぼしているのか，という問題意識のもと，（1）インド経済の総要素生産性の計測とその決定要因分析，（2）インド金融政策の有効性の検証，（3）インドにおける実質為替レートと貿易収支の長期関係，などの研究課題に取り組んでいます。第２に，インドでは，人間が生存するうえで必須カロリー水準を摂取できない絶対的貧困層が国民の約3割も存在していますが，こうした絶対的貧困問題を考察するにあたって，インドの労働市場の構造とその変化に注目しています。
そうした問題意識のもと，（1）労働市場の柔軟化が与える雇用に対するインパクト，（2）出生率の決定要因，（3）貧困緩和計画などの公共政策の評価，などの研究課題に取り組んでいます。第3に，インドは，現在，二輪および四輪自動車生産の世界的な集積地となっています。この背景には，ホンダやスズキなどのインドに進出した日本企業の役割を軽視することができません。
日本企業がインドの産業発展に果たしてきた，あるいはこれから果たすであろう役割を考察するために，インド進出日本企業に対する聞き取り調査のみならず，日印経済関係に関する歴史的な分析とインド進出日本企業に関する基礎的データベースなどの構築も行っています。

わたしは，インド経済の研究を開始して，今年で３３年です。この間，大きくインド経済が変貌したことを実感しています。
インド経済については「全てについては何事かを知り，何事かについては全てを知る」（ジョン・スチュアート・ミル）という姿勢で研鑽を積んでおりますが，まだまだ未熟者です。
