MEXT Scholarship

All application procedures are conducted by the Japanese diplomatic mission (Embassy or Consulate General) responsible for your home country. The scholarship application generally opens in April. Please check the official website of the Japanese diplomatic mission in your home country for more details.

General Schedule of a Selection Process (by the Japanese Diplomatic Mission)

This is a rough schedule. The schedule on the table below is subject to change.



mid-April, 2025 Submission of application documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission in your home country
early May to late July, 2025 First Screening
Until September 1, 2025 Request of a provisional acceptance to Japanese universities
mid-September to 
early October, 2025
Submission of a Placement Preference Application Form
From November, 2025 Second screening and university placement
January to March, 2026 Notification of results of selection and university placement

Admission Process in GSICS

Our admission process starts after you pass the first screening conducted by the Japanese diplomatic mission in your home country and receive your “Passing Certificate of the First Screening.” After receiving the certificate, please immediately contact our Academic Affairs Office (DO NOT send any application documents directly to your desired supervising professor).

After receiving the final decision from the Japanese Government, successful applicant should submit documents to apply for our master’s or doctoral courses during the following periods:

  • March 25 - April 8, 2026 (for the master’s course)
  • February 20 - March 6, 2026 (for the doctoral course)
